Winery holiday ads: a Meta and Google plan for gift season
When to start winery holiday ads, who to target, what to sell instead of a discount, and how to plan around shipping cutoffs on Meta and Google.
Winery holiday ads work best when they start in October, target past buyers before strangers, and sell gifts rather than discounts. The season is short and ad prices peak in late November, so the wineries that do well have their audiences and creative ready before Black Friday, and a plan for the days after the last shipping date.
OrderPort, which runs online stores for wineries, says the November and December holiday season consistently drives the highest share of annual DTC revenue for its most successful partners. Paid media is how you make sure your wine is in front of buyers when they decide what to give.
This is the plan I use for winery holiday campaigns on Meta and Google.
When should a winery start holiday ads?
In October. I split the season into four phases:
- October: build and test. Upload your customer list, check that purchase tracking works, and test two or three gift angles with a small budget. You want to know which offer sells before prices rise.
- November: the gift push. Spend the main budget here, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday if you take part. Put most of it behind the angle that won in October.
- Early December: the shipping deadline. Your real carrier cutoff is the strongest message you have. "Order by [date] for delivery before the 24th" is a reason to buy today that costs you nothing.
- After the cutoff: what still arrives. Local pickup, e-gift cards, tasting experience vouchers and gift memberships. Most wineries switch their ads off here. Keep them running and change the message.
If you start in late November, you pay the highest prices of the year for campaigns that haven't learned anything yet.
Who should winery holiday ads target?
Three audiences, in this order of priority:
- Past buyers and wine club members. Upload your customer list as a Custom Audience on Meta and as Customer Match on Google. These people already trust your wine, and gifting is an easy next step for them. This is usually the cheapest revenue of the season.
- Warm audiences. Website visitors, people who engaged with your Instagram or Facebook, and people who visited the tasting room this year, if you collected their emails.
- New gift-givers. Lookalike audiences built from your best buyers, and Google searches for wine gifts in the places you can ship.
Every one of these ad sets is an alcohol ad. In the United States that means 21+, set per ad set. I cover the age and country rules in Meta's alcohol ad policy for wineries.
What should a winery sell instead of a discount?
A discount trains your buyers to wait for the next one. Holiday buyers want a gift that makes them look good, so give them that:
- Gift sets and bundles at a set price: a vertical of one wine, a "dinner party" trio, a library bottle with a current release.
- Gift notes and gift wrap included at checkout.
- Free shipping over a threshold, which raises the order value instead of cutting the bottle price.
- Tasting experience gift cards. A visit next spring is a gift that ships by email and fills quiet weekdays in March.
- Gift wine club memberships for three or six months. The person who receives it already has a reason to come back.
Each of these deserves its own ad, its own landing page and its own message. "Holiday collection" is not an offer. "Three wines for a Christmas dinner, gift-wrapped, delivered by the 22nd" is.
Should holiday budgets go to Meta or Google?
Both, for different jobs.
Meta (Facebook and Instagram) creates demand. People aren't looking for your winery yet, so the ad has to show the gift: the box being opened, the bottle on a set table, the note inside. Meta also runs your retargeting, which is where most holiday sales close.
Google captures demand that already exists. Protect your brand name in Search, because December is when competitors and resellers bid on it. Target gift searches in the areas you ship to. Google allows alcohol ads, including Shopping ads, in the United States and other approved countries as long as they follow its alcohol policy.
If your budget is small, start with your customer list on Meta and your brand name on Google. Add prospecting only once those two are covered.
What should holiday wine ads show?
The moment of giving, not the vineyard in summer. Gift boxes, wrapping, the table, the people around it. Show the price and the delivery date in the ad itself, so the people who click are the ones ready to buy.
The alcohol rules still apply in December. Never show minors drinking. Don't link wine to health, social success or driving home from a party. Holiday creative breaks these rules more often than you'd think, because party scenes are the obvious idea.
How do you know if holiday ads worked?
Track purchases, not clicks. Before the season starts, check that a sale on your web store sends a purchase event, with its value, to Meta and Google. If your store runs on a separate platform, use the setup in tracking bookings and sales that happen off your website.
At the end of January, compare three numbers for each audience: what you spent, the revenue it brought, and how many of those buyers were new to you. The new buyers are what you work on next year.
What happens in January?
The holidays leave you with your best list of the year: everyone who bought or received a gift. In January, invite the gift buyers to join the club and send the gift card holders an invitation to book their visit. The holiday campaign pays for itself twice when its buyers come back in the spring.
If you want a holiday plan built for your winery before November prices rise, I run paid media for wineries and wine tourism and every engagement starts with a free account audit.
FAQ
When should a winery start holiday ads?
In October. Use October to build audiences and test creative, November for the main gift push, and early December for shipping-deadline reminders. Starting after Thanksgiving means you pay the highest ad prices of the year with no learning behind your campaigns.
Do wineries need to discount for the holidays?
No. Gift sets, bundles, gift notes, free shipping over a threshold, tasting experience gift cards and gift club memberships all give buyers a reason to act without cutting the price of your wine.
Who should winery holiday ads target?
Three groups, in this order: past buyers and club members (uploaded as a customer list), people who visited your website or engaged with your accounts, and new gift-givers similar to your best customers. In the US every alcohol ad must target 21+.
Can wineries run Google Shopping ads?
Yes, in countries where Google allows alcohol ads, including the United States, as long as the ads follow Google's alcohol policy and local law. They don't target minors, imply health or social benefits, or show drinking with driving.
What should a winery do after the last shipping date?
Switch the message to what still arrives on time: local pickup, e-gift cards, tasting experience vouchers and gift club memberships. The ads keep selling after the carriers stop.
